History teaches us -- quite decisively -- that voters tend to vote for leaders they view as "strong". This of course has led to a long line of horrible leaders and dictatorships. But by and large most people look at their local situation and pocketbook issues first, and want someone they view as "strong" in office. I didn't say anything about Trump being comforting -- actually he's the opposite, he encourages rancor -- but about 40% of the U.S. population WANTS that.
