The testament to how Thinkpads are overhyped is that x60 and x61 Thinkpads sold today (the last models with 4:3 screens) are in much worse condition that Apple iBooks, with the latter being 5-6 years older. The plastic on Thinkpads looks melted or just peeling off outright. It's unpleasant to look at, much less touch.
Either Apple fans take much better care of their old tech, which I doubt, or Thinkpads aren't that good.
