I've usually considered the mars colonization meme toxic simply for ignoring the far better candidate - Venus. But if we stumble around on mars first and learn stuff to enable doing Venus, I guess that's good.
The life on mars is probably gonna die. It does seem to be there, and its kinda ridiculous how resistant the academics are to admitting it... But its gonna die. Earth life will eat it. It hasn't been able to unlock the water from the rocks or convert the perchlorates into salts and oxygen... It serves no purpose.
Or maybe it becomes the hero and all it needs is that ozone layer to protect it. Ozone will protect liquid water, too. There could be a compounding snowball effect, where we fix one thing and then more stuff just happens.
