#iNaturalist only works because of the massive legacy of past taxonomic and natural history work. That exists because of a big investment by past generations in professionals that dedicated their lives to describing and uncovering the natural history of all the species in single taxonomic groups.
Relatively little of this type of professional work happens now, and there's so very much more still to do (we've only just got started describing the Earth's biota).
