I finally decided to lift the hose up, squeeze the mouthpiece, and let all the water drain out of the tube after every drink. That works.

But in freezing weather? The drops left in the tube would freeze. Not sure if they would break free and go back into the backpack on the next drink/drain cycle. What works for my summer might not work for your winter.
