The main issues I see with anything federated is that people will not run their own instances. Users will flock to large instances, and everything will be centralized again. And even if people did decide to host their own instance, I predict it would end up somewhat like how hosting your own email server is. Your reach is at the mercy of the moderation of the larger instances, and who they choose to federate with. But someone smarter please explain how I’m wrong.
