Let's say that you want to get to #Bydgoszcz early, via #Poznań, but you can only be in Poznań a few minutes to 5 AM. And you want to use only the suburban/regional trains. You have three options.
5.06 with a 50-minute change in Gniezno, then 20 minutes in Inowrocław, 3 h 30 min total.
5.47 with a 25-minuteprzesiadką change in Piła. It's the roundabout way, and also 3 h 30 min.
6.46 with a 15-minute change in Toruń. A little roundabout, a little over 3 h total.
The first direct train departs at 9.09, and needs just 2 h 10 min to get there.
Back in the day, you just took a morning train to Toruń (now I don't have a connection to catch it), had a narrow change in Inowrocław (no such change anymore) and you were in Bydgoszcz early.
And I'm only considering the main station now, other Bydgoszcz stations make things even harder.
Explanatory note: the shortest route from Poznań to Bydgoszcz goes through Gniezno and Inowrocław, where the railway forks towards Bydgoszcz and Toruń. Connections via Toruń use a short perpendicular suburban line. Connections via Piła are entirely roundabout, reach Bydgoszcz from the other (west) side.
