Most consumer products are a scam imo, but battery backups are the worst in the pro-sumer computer land. If you can afford it, spend the $1-2k once on a nice commercial backup unit (rack mount usually, just throw it on the floor) and keep it for a couple decades.
The best units I have are over 15 years old. Battery cages only cost $200-300 from the mfg every 3-5 years. So in the worst cast, it cost the price of the unit in batteries after 15+ years. That's pretty good for hardware imo.
If you want to get creative you can wire up your own big ass battery packs too. Commercial units are usually very adaptable for these purposes.
Replacing batteries for 3 year old consumer units, which of course are discontinued, for nearly 3/4 the price of a new unit is retarded.
