I guess the difference (for me) is the descent from, for example, 1) empathy is a good thing to 2) we're just gonna pretend it's a good thing to 3) we're not gonna even pretend anymore to 4) actually it's a bad thing to 5) we're gonna reward those without and punish those with.
Those last couple leaps have kind of shaken me, I must admit.
