And if that work *isn't* done? Not all software is maintained assiduously, and you often don't know ahead of time what to expect.
I personally am more comfortable with the model of "Pay 'full price' for version X, get updates that fix any significant bugs that shipped.
Then at some point in the future, pay 50%-100% for version X+1 or X+2 or X+3 depending on when I feel the upgrade is sufficiently worthwhile. Or maybe never.
