What always amazes me in these books is how some women seemed to make work for themselves, as if there wasn't enough anyway, through the sheer lack of modern conveniences, without making it even more of a toil than it already was. I have to say that none of the women in my family were like this at all, but I have known those who did things like iron the babies nappies and their own knickers etc, to hell with that!
