The President-elect of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, on Friday called for unity and an end to violence in the southern African country, saying he will be a president for all Mozambicans after taking office in mid-January. In a statement, Nyusi, a 47-year-old former provincial governor, expressed regret over the violence, destruction of public and private property, and killing of people that has occurred in major cities since his election victory was announced four days ago. He said the cities most affected are the capital Maputo, Matola, Beira and Nampula. The violence has contributed to the country's decline and an increase in the number of poor and unemployed people, he said. Nyusi expressed gratitude to those who are working to remove obstacles to a return to normal life, and praised the security forces that have successfully mitigated the political crisis, saying that several police officers were killed in recent clashes. He also expressed regret over the impact of the situation on the country's economy and institutions. He said that soon, they will work together to find solutions to the problems caused by this unfortunate situation.
