I think I struggle to understand the difference between community consent and binding agreements, maybe my brain is just too poisoned by the state controlling everything. in a perfect world where everyone got to set our own community standards of use, we would still have to exclude people who didn't want to respect the standards. and I imagine that would be setup as some kind of written agreement for what we wanted people to do with the data. so I guess the problem is asking the state to enforce it rather than enforcing it ourselves? maybe fedi should just move to allowlists-only and create consensual agreements between servers.
