I was thinking more of the power struggle between people like Nasser and Al-Quwatli (dictators who leaned Left and secular) and people like Faisal Al-Saud (dictators who leaned Right and theocratic.)
If one looks at the 1962-1970 civil war in Yemen, it's a double proxy war that really illustrates the issue. The Saudi, Israeli and Pakistani governments backed the royalists, with the British and and American governments behind them, and the Egyptian government backed the republicans, with the USSR behind them. Unfortunately, the Americans won the wider Cold War and so the theocratic oil kings they'd supported ended up dominating the region.
