THE PILUM

The pilum was a key weapon in the Roman legionary's arsenal. This heavy javelin, typically around two meters long, was designed to disrupt enemy formations and disable shields. Its distinctive feature was its iron head, which would often bend upon impact, making it difficult for the enemy to reuse.

The pilum's effectiveness lay in its weight and design. The heavy shaft and sharp point allowed it to penetrate enemy shields, while the bending head would often lodge itself in the shield, rendering it useless. This could force the enemy to abandon their shields or expose themselves to attack.

Beyond its practical use, the pilum also had a psychological impact. The sight of a legionary hurling a pilum with deadly accuracy could be intimidating to the enemy, and the fear of being struck by such a weapon could demoralize troops.

While the pilum was a formidable weapon, it was not the only javelin used by the Romans. The lancea, a lighter javelin, was used by cavalry and auxiliary troops, while the verutum was an earlier type of javelin used by the Roman army.
