There were hidden tracks that played at the end of a CD as well (wherever they happened to be stored) Often this was simply a matter of that track being hidden by going uncredited on the liner notes, the CD packaging.
But CD + G, SACD, other variants between Red Book Audio and full blown CD-ROM didn’t get much traction because the mechanisms of the drives couldn’t even read or parse the data.
