The logic is simple, but it does mean that many ships just can't be done with 100% safety - not a good design. Sometimes you gotta turn the knob and hang on (default keys Z or X to grab a surface).
Also try to make sure you have an escape route to the hab. If something does smack you in the face, don't screw around finding suit repair kits, just go directly to the hab and finish the shift - your suit will be repaired for you.
