Well, same to you!" kind of situation. Like we, simply by stating our lack of belief, are leveling some sort of insult at them.
Perhaps it's because some atheists can be dicks about it - but then, so can some believers; we should try not to default to the assumption that every member of a group is as bad as its worst representatives.
