1975. Grandma Link's house. I'm 3 years old.
Family gathering. Some of my grandmother's cousins were visiting from Germany.
I noticed a tattoo on their arms. Tattoos on women were extremely unusual at the time, which is why I noticed.
Being 3, I asked. I was immediately shushed and redirected.
Later I learned what it was. They survived the camps.
My grandmother's parents left Germany after WWI. The rest of her relatives didn't.
That stuck with me. It informs my entire world view.
Nazis, in whatever form, should never be admitted to polite company. Ever. They are poison.
