Because I wasn’t able to safely express my pain in childhood and was always managing my father’s emotions, I turned my autistic pattern recognition skill to human social interactions, but particularly pain and suffering. I developed a skill of empathy to some extent because expressing my compassion for those in pain was a way to express my pain.
This mix of compassion and suppression turned into caretaking and, at my worst, codependency.
