Random historical computing tidbit. The Irix Human Interface Guidelines used a node graph UI as a notional example of a typical Irix application, in an illustration that is a node graph, but the 400+ page document says nothing about node graph UI widget guidelines.

As far as I can tell, nobody ever really wrote down any DAG UI interface principles. 100 pages on a button then, "eh, the rest is obvious."
