The United States fell eight spots to number 23 in the global rankings of overall happiness between 2023 and 2024, according to the World Happiness Report. Hawaii ranked first for overall happiness, emotional and physical wellbeing, and has the lowest rate of adult depression. Maryland ranked second with the highest median income in the U.S. at $94,991. West Virginia ranked last in overall emotional and physical wellbeing and has the highest prevalence of adult depression. The bottom 10 also includes Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Missouri.
