I'm looking to gift a friend with a fun, easy to use, astrophotog setup. Alas, neither of us knows much if anything about it.

The setting is a 400 acre ranch near Idaho with spectacular sky views. It's a gift from multiple friends so the budget is reasonable ($2000-3000). He has an SLR and a very nice tripod, but when I read "basic guides" and see pictures like this, I get overwhelmed
