I get the science is hard argument, I also get that all research may not lead to positive outcomes, what I don't buy is cases where "scientists" knowingly squander money they know will not lead to positive impact.
Also I don't believe all scientist are cut from the same cloth, and I do think some of them will definitely have a hard time if their current project shuts down.
