I mean, i'm not really talking about "separating the art from the artist", which i agree is impossible and usually a cover for people who just want to be shitty. I'm trying to gesture more at: it's true that people's beliefs and preoccupations show up in their art -- but so do a lot of other things, including things the artist didn't intend to put there. And it's okay to love something complicated.
