people hate feeling like they are on the losing side of anything, especially if they have something to lose. a lot of people, including leftists, back up their paranoia of losing by associating themselves with whatever they think is a "winner". this produces a cult of personality or a cult of the state.
nobody who calls themselves a communist likes to be told that "communism failed every time it was tried." it is, however, the truth! even liberals can be right about things.
but some people will respond to this by saying "actually, china is going to destroy american hegemony and build true socialism in 2050." this isnt something anyone knows is going to happen, and the person saying it certainly has no idea what socialism or communism means. yet it provides them with that cushion, that psychological barrier to admitting a weakness, that desire for a powerful state to swoop in and save their ass. it removes their responsibility to act—after all, china is already winning! and when it isnt winning, its doing 5d chess.
