I can't find a catagorical answer but although *Scotland* is closer to the *island of Ireland* (Northern Ireland) than *England* is to France, the nearest *English* coastline to the *island of Ireland* seems to be much greater than the 32km across the Straits of Dover.
If we are looking at Ireland - the country, rather than the island - the distance between any point in the UK (Scotland, Wales or England) is still *probably* greater than the distance between England and France.
I'm not considering the Isle of Man to be part of the UK, although I doubt it affects the calculation!
