“Important to remember, John the Baptist wasn’t sent to preach to the Gentiles; he was sent to preach to God’s chosen people. He was preaching as it were to the church or the saints. Yet, as we read John’s words, we get the picture that they were not as saintly as God desired them to be. Well did the prophet Malachi prophesy, “… lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.” Malachi 4:6 Things were not right in the people’s hearts, and they needed a wake-up call. John told them, “…the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringers not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” Luke 3:9 I can imagine many of the more “religious” people listening and shaking their heads, assuming John was just some arrogant man who thought too highly of himself. Imagine telling them they need to shape up or they would be destroyed, unthinkable! They were God’s chosen people, “The Church!” However, as John continues talking to the people, he lets them know that they have failed in the first two commandments. They have not been loving their neighbor as they were called to, nor have they loved God as they should.”
