Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

"doth not commit sin: To be born of God is to be inwardly renewed and restored to a holy integrity by the power of the Spirit of God. Such a one does not work iniquity nor practice disobedience, which is contrary to his new nature and his spirit.
he cannot sin...born of God: He cannot continue in the course and practice of sin [because]: (1.) There is that light in his mind which shows him the evil and malignity of sin. (2.) There is that bias upon his heart which disposes him to loathe and hate sin. (3.) There is the spiritual principle or disposition that breaks the force and fullness of the sinful acts. (4.) There is a disposition for humiliation and repentance for sin when it has been committed. So those who persist in a sinful life sufficiently demonstrate that they are not born of God."
