Great questions.
I've been storing a personal archive, and keeping it accessible and backed up since my first digital camera in 2000, although some sound files may be a little earlier.
I currently use Backblaze as my commercial off-site backup. Don't like the idea of using it as extended space as I like having a copy of my data (or three) on-site not in a company's data center. It's my "the house burnt down and I can't get to my other off-site backup" backup.
Locally I should probably just build a NAS at this point but I'm using my 2020 M1 Mac Mini as a media server and as the box physically connected to the primary media drive. That drive is a 2TB SSD which seemed huge when I ordered it but since reading the Century Scale Storage article I'm looking at some reliable 8TB HDDs to replace it when I have the money. Got to have two for redundancy, and bother that means I'd need a bigger drive for the Mac's time machine too!
Low Tech Magazine crossed my path when I was playing with a solar powered Raspberry Pi idea I had. Their site is self hosted and solar powered, and I've found myself wandering their archives time and again. Well worth a look if solar, diy tech, etc. is your thing.
