It kinda requires a fundamental belief that your understanding as an individual is a fundamental truth despite all the evidence of human history that what we know now about anything in particular is not what we are going to know in the future.
It's maybe why you see potentially progressive people drifting to a conservative position on trans rights. In order to preserve your notion of the perceived natural order that you're comfortable with and in fact may have built many aspects of your personality around, you have to reject any fresh perspectives that may have previously been hidden.
That could happen in so many areas of life but when it involves the human rights of a minority group, that's where it becomes super reactionary.
