So apparently, of all things, geology is "white supremacist", according to a geography professor at Queen Mary University of London.
She argues that geology emerged as a “colonial practice” that resulted in "white supremacy of the planet," leading to what she terms “geotrauma.” Moreover, Yusoff asserts that these issues persist, writing that “geology continues to function within a white supremacist praxis" and that the field of study has been "radicalized." "To tell a story of rocks is to account for a eugenic materialism in which white supremacy made surfaces built on racialised underground,” she wrote.
Okay, geology has been used in the service of ruthless resource extraction, sure.
But if that makes it "white supremacist", then shovels, pickaxes, maps and wells are also white supremacist and mired in "systemic racism".
I would like to get the professor's comments on how exactly shovels should be decolonised. I'm sure she'd have plenty to say on the subject.
Another point. So telling the "story" (eugh) of rocks is now inherently bad? Because... what? And what the hell are "eugenic materialism" and "racialised underground"?
