Took a walk up to Dre Newydd (Anglesey Barracks) above Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris yesterday evening. Beautiful light, but a sad place. The cottages were built to house quarrymen working at Chawrel Dinorwig. Uncomfortable places to return to after a day in the wet and cold of the quarry. The houses were condemned in 1937, as, I imagine, were many of the men who lived in them. Goats pick at what grows between the slate up there now.
