the thing I'm always sad about when thinking about things like climate change and eventual end of humanity is the idea that there won't be anyone to look at the universe, or at least our section of it.
I often see people say that humans should disappear because they just destroy the world for animals, but also, humans are in the unique position of being able to observe the world, talk about it, be self-aware and make art about it.
I always think in the end that this is the only good answer to the question of the purpose of life. what makes humanity special is that while we're there, we're the record of everything that happened. our interactions with each other are what it's all about.
it's like the thing about a tree falling in a forest if no one is here to hear it. if we're not around, then the rest of life might as well just be a minimised background bitcoin miner, if no one is looking at its output
