I would say that the major shortcoming of Chomsky's political position is that it defines itself mostly by what it is against (neoliberalism, US imperialism) rather than what it is for (anarcho-syndicalism apparently, even though he never talked about it)
Beyond the man itself, this vision led us toward the weak reformism of the Latin American pink wave and (more ominously) the idea that Iran and Russia represent an alternative
This vision also guided the left during the period after the collapse of the USSR, when a positive vision of socialism was a much harder sell. Historically, I don't blame him for having taken this approach
But maybe it's time to move past it
