I just saw this #photo, described “P-47 Thunderbolts of the 318th Fighter Group over the East Field on Saipan, 1944”. “Rolling shutter…”, I thought, and immediately “…what?!”

I don't know much about photography technology of the time, so before I scream “fake!” – was back then some way of taking photos, that could result in such effect? I don't remember ever seeing it on planes photos from WWII days…

Focal plane shutter, with thin opening, but moving relatively slowly?
