Back in the mid-20th century when discussions were being had about making Hawaii a U.S. state, the sugar cane industry colonizers were all for it, thinking it would be great for business. But what came with statehood in 1959 was labor laws, safety standards, and minimum wage. They could no longer pay the workers slave wages (47 cents a day) and they all went bankrupt.
