We are all just trying to minimize pain from the moment we are born. The reaching out for the breast to satisfy hunger / thirst, the obedience of instruction to avoid argument, the pursuit of success to avoid poverty, hunger and homelessness. Everything you do is an act to preserve a neutral state. Sometimes those acts let you experience a joyous moment. Enough joyous moments cemented in your memory creat life contentment. You feel good with the overall state of things. These are 2 different things not defined by happiness. The term is too broad, perhaps on purpose.
