If you have seen reports of “#Ukraine shutting down churches”, a story amplified in different flavours from moderate to “Zelensky satanic regime” as below, that’s exactly opposite of what happened. In this particular case, supporters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) stormed St. Michael’s Cathedral in Cherkasy after it transitioned to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) the day before. The UOC-MP group, unhappy with the transfer, broke through the gates, causing significant chaos within the church by throwing benches, buckets, and spraying tear gas.
The story of Orthodox churches in #Ukraine seems complex due to naming conventions but is really simple.
There was Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate, which would be more precisely called “the KGB church” due to full control of Soviet security services over the Moscow Patriarchate since 1970’s, which were then inherited by FSB. The UOC-MP was, as result, for years persistently whispering “Putin is god” into the ears of Ukrainian believers.
And there’s Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which separated from Moscow in 2019 and was recognised by Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. In 2022, following the full-scale invasion, UOC-MP had been outlawed as a “religious organisation supporting aggression against Ukraine” and its churches are being gradually transferred to OCU. This process is legally contested, which is why it’s taking so much time.
In some cases, the pro-Russian supporters stage such violent provocations as in this case, which their Western proxies present as “ban on Christianity in Ukraine”. This is of course a lie - many Christian churches continue to operate in Ukraine, including Orthodox, Baptist, Roman-Catholic, Protestant etc, none of them feeling an urge to justify Russian invasion.
P.S. Ukraine had its own Orthodox patriarchate until 17th century when it was cannibalised by… the Moscow Patriarchate of course.
