Because people evaluate their own situation relative to others, the existence of people who are worse off tends to make them think "well, I'm doing all right, so let's not change anything", rather than "this system sucks, let's change it". People who react in the latter way are weirdos who possess a defect known as "empathy". This is why capitalism is optimized to destroy empathy.
