I often got frustrated with my early math lessons in elementary school because arbitrary rules used to make things easier clearly weren't true. For example, when I learned about negative numbers so you could subtract a bigger number from a smaller number, or proper long division so it wasn't just memorizing tables and writing down remainders.
When I would question these things, I would get shot down, so I started teaching myself and largely stopped listening to those teachers or even falling asleep in class. I looked like a bad student yet got the full score more or less (don't remember exactly) on the AP Calculus exam. My teachers were always confused and angry with me because they didn't understand that they're approach just frustrated a little kid and broke my trust. 😓
That said, having been a teacher, I also know how intensely frustrating a student I must have been in some ways 😅
