*This* is the answer I was looking for. He's got a Canon D7 and good tripods. Sounds like I need to add a tracking mount and a telephoto lens (which he may already have)

I will reread this guide and see what mixture of budget, ease of set up, etc. makes the most sense. My only rule of cameras is that the best one is the one readily available when you want to take the photo. Burdensome equipment is useless. Thank you again for indulging my newbie qs
