Got escalated out of the call center. The representative was very apologetic, but apparently whatever they did to my laptop was bad enough that they've asked for my agreement to send a new replacement, either identical or revised-or-better parts for the same spec.
I had already waved goodbye to my data, so this is the best way to make lemonade out of lemons. Not what I expected from "ultimate" support, but I'm wondering how much worse it'd be if I hadn't sprung for it.
