Bernhard Cornwell's Saxon Stories (adapted for TV as The Last Kingdom).
I like it and lots of people like the TV series, but I think it needs a bit of special interest for medieval history, but not too much, as it's only vaguely accurate. Also, all kinds of CN for medieval behaviour, violence and stereotypes.
It is a compelling dramatisation of the Creation of England focussing on one marketable main character who isn't historic at all.
Basically Sharpe, but for the 900s AD
