I've been trying recently to pay with cash, but more and more small businesses are rejecting cash payments in my area.
A decade ago it was the other way around, due to the high cost of card processing.
In 2023, the King County council in Washington state voted to require retail businesses to accept cash because it was becoming such an issue.
My position: if US dollars remains our legal currency, businesses and individuals should be required to accept it as legal tender.
Businesses that do not accept cash cut access to goods and services for the unbanked. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), 4.2% of US households (5.6 million) were unbanked, meaning no one in the household had a checking or savings account.
