Open source means the code to run/execute said program or app is publicly available and can be scrutinized, inspected, and verified. Closed source applications like many popular apps (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) do not publicly disclose the code meaning we’re expected to trust their word when they say their code does or does not do something.
Open source does not guarantee safety but overtime will become more robust as people inspect it and improve it.
