A few years ago I was messing around with gnuplot to make a rotating 3D plot with dots marking the spatial distribution of a large sample of galaxies I was working on. I used that exact same trick to mimic haze! It was a bit tricky as gnuplot isn't designed to do that, so I had to compute the colour vs viewing distance function from scratch, but it did the trick.

I really need to get serious about learning Blender...
