Sylwia 🏳️⚧️ :nyarch: (nprofile…twud) yep, car related fatalities have been a leading cause of death in the US since before my parents were born, it's one of those things that absolutely are preventable but americans act like it's some unchangeable force of nature, like mass shootings
I think it would be fair to say europe has maintained a lot of their old world cultural institutions, having walkable urban environments being part of that, whereas in US pedistrians aren't even considered in city planning, most raods were built post WWII, most developments since then have been designed for cars only, and there is nothing left of the old culture, everything is just chain stores and highways
if you're not in a city that was established 150 years ago the urban environment is completely inhospitable to pedestrians and no one even questions it...
The only "urbanists" in american context are like bourgeois neil armstrong wannabes and they force local governments to ad bike lanes, which are good to have i guess, but riding a bike on the road is unsafe as hell, and these types aren't really concerns with transportation of urban poor, they just want bike lanes in their rich neighborhoods where they can engage in their elitist hobby
