There is no need to post to the same relay for a nostr conversation to succeed. Nostr references and profiles of people followed provide hints to relays, and a nostril client *should* use these (read only) to provide as complete a view of the threads or feeds I am reading as possible, even if these relays are not in my personally configured list.
Nostr clients *may* provide further filtering capabilities.
