Posts like this set me off. It’s weird and gross. There’s no gatekeepers dedicated to the space and last I checked none of the protocol authors nor platform devs asked anyone to gatekeep . People have chased off journalists and influencers, just like they did Black & Brown people. People want growth including the person that made Mastodon, who said he hopes to have 100m accounts. Maybe those that are gatekeepers and anti-growth and go hide in group chats and private matrix spaces as opposed to actual social networks. It’s also not people simply choosing Nazi bars as many people run small businesses and are freelancers. Some people have communities and causes they care about so they remain. Why tf leave your communities to come to some whiny gate keeping ass platform where users tell others how to use their own damn accounts?! I’ve never seen that on Big Social platforms

Why are some people here so hell-bent on growth?

We didn't "chase away" the influencers, journos or celebrities.

They either never came here or left the moment they realised that there is no monetization of attention here, no algorithm to game.

These are the people who are used to posting into the void, getting attention, clicks and money without ever having to interact. These are the VERY people who made most social media unbearable.

And they went back to the Nazi bars for their dopamine.

I don't miss them, I don't need them.

Good fucking riddance.

Is Mastodon perfect? Of course it isn't. But it's fun if you participate. You cannot just consume the feed here. You have to be a part of the feed, you have to curate. And if you'd rather go back and look up what a Kardashian has to say about the state of the world: be my guest.

But please stop this jammering about "growth". There are a lot of people here who are simply done with unchecked growth for growth's sake.
